Fitness will go Back to the Future 2010!
In 2009 most of the trends where parts of old school fitness techniques just repackaged for a new generation and I think that trend will continue. As the former owner of R&J Health Studio in Brooklyn, New York which was called the “East Coast Mecca of Bodybuilding” and part of the movie Pumping Iron – starring Lou Ferrigno and Arnold Schwarzenegger was filmed in – I have seen it all… come and go and come back again.
Old gyms like R&J are what shaped our fitness culture. Look at many of the older bodybuilders. They’ll show you what is possible as you age with a proper lifestyle, not just one principle plucked from that lifestyle.
Many don’t realize it but the bodybuilding community has been leading the pack with regards to developments in the wellness, weight loss, or fitness arena since the beginning. If you want to know what the next diet frenzy will be, just look at what the bodybuilders are doing today.
The problem is that the new up and coming self-proclaimed diet gurus only take one facet of what bodybuilders are doing and build a whole philosophy around it, leaving out all the other factors in the bodybuilding lifestyle. That’s like building a house with only 2×4’s. You certainly need 2×4’s when building a house. But you also need piping, nails, roof shingles, windows, doors, etc. It would be silly to think you could build a house with only one of the supplies you need. Yet this is exactly what these fitness gurus do and it is just as silly. In fact, it is dangerous.
For diets I think you are going to see more of a low carb, moderate fat and high protein diet repackaged in a thousand different ways with a thousand different names. Fat will no longer be the enemy and carbs will not longer be the evil villain they will just be a little more understood.
I think we will see these old school training principles from the bodybuilding play book recycled in one way or fashion for a huge profit.
CYCLE TRAINING
COMPOUND SETS
DROP SETS
DOUBLE SPLIT TRAINING
ECLECTIC TRAINING
INSTINCTIVE TRAINING
MUSCLE CONFUSION
CONTINUOUS TENSION
FLUSHING TRAINING
FORCED REPS
GIANT SETS
HOLISTIC TRAINING
ISOLATION TRAINING
ISO-TENSION
MUSCLE PRIORITY
PEAK CONTRACTION
PRE-EXHAUSTION
PROGRESSIVE OVERLOAD
PYRAMID TRAINING
REST PAUSE
RETRO-GRAVITY
SUPER SETS
SPLIT TRAINING
STAGGERED SETS
TRI-SETS
In short I don’t think we will see a huge innovation but I do believe that we will continue to see old school techniques repackaged with trendy names sold to hungry consumers!
